The second day of a scientific conference entitled "Armenian genocide: challenges on the 100th anniversary” was held with the presentation of reports on the topic of "The Armenian Genocide: Imperative of Memory Preservation”. Director of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of RA, Harutyun Marutyan in his report touched upon the study of memory of the Genocide through the prism of the historiography of the Holocaust. He compared some issues of the Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust. In particular, he noted that in the case of the Holocaust the criminals did not offer the Jews to renounce their faith and thereby save their lives.

“The Holocaust is not based on ethnic issues, but on the crime, in the case of the Armenian Genocide, the ethnic origin of the criminals is specified", -Harutyun Marutyan said and added that unless the fact of genocide is recognized by the new generation, this issue will constantly be on the ethnic field, and not on the legal field, and Armenians will constantly consider the Turks to be their enemies.
Some of the participants of the scientific conference were against the comparison of the Armenian Genocide with the Jewish Holocaust, noting that they are different, despite the fact that both are genocides.
Website www.houshamadyan.org, created by the representatives of the diaspora was presented. The aim of it is to highlight the life of Armenians living in the territory of the Ottoman Empire.
“The family archive is the place where you can find many valuable materials. They are collective, pan-Armenian memories and they restore the memory of the exterminated people”, - said the Vahe Tashchean, the website's author.
The issues of teaching genocide to different age levels, the question of compensation and possible means of confrontation to Turkish agitation, as well as the problem of the destruction of numerous Armenian monuments in the territory of Western Armenia were also discussed. According to Samvel Karapetyan, the chairman of the Foundation for the Study of Armenian Architecture, the monuments on the Armenian Genocide also contribute to the coverage of some fragments of the massacre.
The head of the department of international treaties of the Constitutional Court of Armenia, specialist in international law Vladimir Vardanyan touched upon this issue from the legal point of view. He spoke about the Nuremberg process, about the concept of such crimes directed against humanity, as well as the UN convention on the Genocide recalling the well-known lawyer, the author of the word "Genocide" and the convention itself Raphael Lemkin. The latter, in his famous interview to CBS, noted that it was a Genocide of Armenian people.
Vardanyan noted that the resource of the parliamentary recognition of the Armenian Genocide is extremely limited and is of symbolic nature, and in exchange he proposed setting up precedents of court cases, taking steps to introduce criminal responsibility for denying the Armenian Genocide in different countries, which, in his opinion, would be more effective. Vladimir Vardanyan suggested to apply to the Hague tribunal, considering the Armenian Genocide in the context of crimes against humanity. He also offered to create a state body dealing with the legal issues of the Armenian Genocide.
The conference was also attended by the representative of the Turkish intellectuals, human rights defender Ragyp Zarakolu. He presented statistical data related to the search of thematic material in Google- in Turkey, that show that there are lots of anti-Armenian and materials representing Turkish official view.
“Especially Turkish intellectuals are tired of listening to the official view of history and try to get acquainted with the alternative, the true history”, - said Ragyp Zarakolu.
The participants expressed hope that the scientific conference will become a starting point for other discussions. Working groups were formed to systematize and strategically handle the steps taken towards the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
